San Francisco — When Sam Altman and Jony Ive grabbed espressos at Cafe Zoetrope in North Beach last May, it looked like two old friends catching up. But the viral video of that coffee date was actually the quiet reveal of something much bigger: OpenAI’s $6.5 billion acquisition of Ive’s startup, io Products. It marked the official start of an ambitious joint effort to build what both men believe is computing’s next big thing—a screenless, AI-native device meant to sit in your pocket or on your desk and understand your life.

A year later, that big vision is running headfirst into real-world pressure. OpenAI’s hardware team—now more than 400 strong, operating out of a converted brick building in Jackson Square—is racing to meet a targeted late-2026 reveal. Shrouded in secrecy, the gadget is being framed as a "third core" companion to your phone and laptop, swapping traditional screens and apps for quiet, voice-first intelligence.

From Coffee Dates to a $6.5 Billion Deal

The partnership between OpenAI’s CEO and the legendary British designer behind the iPhone, iMac, and iPod started around 2023. According to Ive, his son Charlie was the first in the family to use ChatGPT and urged his dad to meet Altman. What began as casual conversations quickly turned into a shared belief: artificial general intelligence needed a totally new physical form, not just another glass rectangle.

In May 2025, OpenAI bought io Products for $6.5 billion—its largest acquisition ever. The deal closed two months later, with Ive and his design collective, LoveFrom, taking on creative direction across OpenAI while keeping their independence.

"We gathered together the best hardware and software engineers, the best technologists, physicists, scientists, researchers and experts in product development and manufacturing," Altman and Ive wrote in a joint letter at the time. "The ideas seemed important and useful. They were optimistic and hopeful... They made everyone smile."

What We Actually Know About the Device

While details are tight, pieces of the puzzle have trickled out through interviews and leaks. The device is expected to be screenless, palm-sized, and built primarily for voice interaction. Crucially, it isn't a wearable—Ive has voiced plenty of skepticism about smart glasses and watches. Instead, it’s meant to sit nearby, using built-in mics and cameras to stay contextually aware of its surroundings.

Altman called early prototypes "jaw-droppingly good" during a late-2025 appearance alongside Ive, emphasizing how deeply the tech understands context. Ive, meanwhile, has talked about striving for "almost naive" simplicity—joking to Altman that you know a design is right when you "want to lick it or take a bite out of it."

More recent reports from June 2026 suggest the initial product might look a bit like a home speaker, complete with moving mechanical parts meant to mimic human presence. The end goal: an active participant in your daily routine that filters information without the relentless notification noise of a smartphone.

"I think he feels some responsibility for what happened with the iPhone," said Clive Grinyer, a longtime friend who worked with Ive at design firm Tangerine. "It became a gateway to this terrible world" of screen addiction.

Fighting Apple’s Long Shadow

The ambition is high, but so are the stakes—especially as OpenAI finds itself in a messy legal fight with Apple. In July 2026, Apple filed a heavyweight lawsuit alleging that former employees who joined OpenAI—including former io hardware chief Tang Tan—stole trade secrets regarding supply chains and technical specs. The lawsuit claims over 400 former Apple employees have jumped ship to OpenAI.

OpenAI denies the claims, maintaining it respects fair competition and has no interest in rival trade secrets. While legal experts don't expect the suit to kill the project, it could easily throw a wrench in the timeline if OpenAI has to scrub files, rework engineering, or swap suppliers.

There's a deep irony here: Ive, whose legacy is intertwined with Steve Jobs and Apple's golden era, is now building a device designed to dethrone the iPhone—all while fending off claims that his team used Apple’s playbook to do it.

A Tough Market for AI Hardware

OpenAI is stepping into a space littered with recent flops. The Humane AI Pin raised $241 million before being panned by critics and selling off its IP to HP. The Rabbit R1 didn't fare much better. Both struggled with poor battery life, sluggish performance, and a lingering question: why carry another device when your phone already does it all?

Altman and Ive’s answer is total simplification. Instead of giving you another screen to stare at, they want to take screens away entirely. Altman describes the goal as a "peaceful" computing experience—more like "sitting in a beautiful cabin by a lake" than "walking through Times Square."

Whether people actually want that is still unproven. Privacy advocates are already wary of an always-on device with active cameras and microphones in the home. On top of that, Altman’s own polarizing reputation—from his temporary firing by the OpenAI board in 2023 to ongoing debates over trust—could make some consumers hesitant to hand over that level of access.

"A beautiful object does not solve a trust deficit," noted Gary Sheng, founder of Hyperagent Labs.

The Big Picture

For OpenAI, this isn't just about launching a cool gadget. As models like Google’s Gemini, Meta’s Llama, and Anthropic’s Claude close the capability gap with ChatGPT, owning the hardware becomes critical. A successful standalone device hooks users directly into OpenAI's ecosystem, keeping them tied to its software regardless of what rivals are doing.

"They're being forced to build hardware because it gives them more control over the user experience," said Anshel Sag, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. "The biggest challenge OpenAI has is delivering something compelling enough to get people to actually buy it."

OpenAI global affairs chief Chris Lehane confirmed earlier this year that the company is still aiming for a late-2026 reveal, though timelines can always shift. If it works, it could change how we interact with AI every day. If it stumbles, it risks becoming another high-profile reminder that hardware is hard—and revolutionary products are much easier to announce than to build.
